Painting Architectural Illusion or Trompe L'Oeil (Linear striping)

Example projects:
Learn basic techniques of the ancient art of creating splendid
architectural illusions. Known as 'quadraturismo' this art
reached its height in the baroque period in Italy. This basic
course covers learning the correct use of specific tools of the
trade such as the lining ruler and the correct brushes. Students
study how to create linear divisions of shading to create the
illusion of a three dimensional frame, how to construct a
composition, the use of chiaroscuro, and the creation of linear
architectural elements in tromp l'oeil relief.
Teacher: Special courses with master painter
Marco Cavallini: This is a unique
opportunity for students to study under a well known Florentine
master. The curriculum is divided into brief courses with
assistance in English.

Example projects:
This is the second course on the art of 'quadraturismo' students
study and make examples of the most frequently used decorative
elements. Learn how to draw and how to employ them in mural
decoration. Techniques for executing non-linear decorative
elements are covered.

Course objectives:
Learn to master the free form elements of a mural composition
such as faux marble, landscape, floral and leafy elements, and
the imitation of surface textures.
This course covers:
• mixing and using an harmonious
colour palette
• brushstroke work and shading
• imitation of stone and marble
• finishes and patinas (‘antiqued’
surfaces)
• the composition of a landscape
with the construction of foreground, middle and background using
colour and value to create atmospheric perspective
About the course: This course introduces systems of
working with colourful and stylish elements which add life and
interest to the more rigorous formal elements of chiaroscuro
work. It is useful for people who wish to have a well rounded
study of all the elements of mural and decorative panel
painting. Recommended to be taken in combination with Painting
Architectural Illusion courses. (See above)
